From the Desk of the President Emeritus

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. My prayer for you is that you are in good health both spiritually and physically, and active in the service of the Lord.

Jan and I continue to enjoy the ministry and the excitement of serving the Lord with CCBI. As you know, there are different kinds of excitement, and CCBI leaders are often experiencing several of them. When we hear of students leading people into salvation and discipleship that is joyful excitement. We sometimes undergo shocking excitement when a teacher, national director or key leader drops out unexpectedly with no replacement in sight.

I remember yet another kind of excitement. . . One dark night in Suriname, South America, Lance Even and I were traveling with a driver in a car, racing to reach the Suriname River for the last ferry of the night. Deep in the jungle we bounced and bumped along the dirt road as fast as possible, when suddenly a front tire blew out. As the three of us leapt out to change the tire we found the spare also flat! The driver removed the wheel and told us he would be back in six or seven hours. Now here was a new experience in excitement.

After waiting an hour or so in absolutely black darkness we were paralyzed to hear a man’s voice right in our faces, demanding, “Why are you out here?” The very blood in my veins froze! After our nervous explanation it turned out that the Lord had sent a Christian to invite us to his jungle cabin for a welcome supper of bread and coconut water and a few hours of sleep, until the strong arm of the returning driver reached in the dark open window to grab us back to his car. There is seldom a dull moment in God’s work, and we do praise Him because He is always in control.

We praise God for continuing to send new students, and for the ongoing study and graduation of many others. We also thank God for your prayers and gifts for CCBI. We would not be accomplishing anything without your support. Please do not fail to pray earnestly for CCBI leadership, as we are dealing with some significant decisions and must know God’s will. Never forget that you have a share in all the heavenly blessings of CCBI’s ministry.

Yours in Christ,
Raymond Saunders

Fall Conference

October 4 - 6, 2002
An exciting weekend at a new, and convenient location!
Cookeville Rescue Mission (off I-40)
Mark your calendar now to attend!

Fall Conference News

There is also excitement in plans for the Fall Conference the first weekend in October, at a new and convenient location. Board member Rev. Larry Self has offered the comfortable facilities of Cookeville Rescue Mission for meetings and meals and possibly some overnight guests, while those who live in the Cookeville area have an opportunity to invite others into their homes for sleeping and breakfast. This brings back memories of board meetings in a previous century when everybody came to Sunbright and camped out at the Samaritan Inn, local homes or the primitive motel. Be sure to mark your calendar now and plan to spend October 4-6 Friday night through Sunday morning with missionaries, friends and supporters of CCBI at Cookeville Rescue Mission, just off I-40.

Motels have been contacted for special rates for the fall conference. We got a very good deal with Executive Lodge off the Sparta/Cookeville exit. Those who make reservations under Caribbean College of the Bible may get a single for $35.95, double for $39.95, with no tax under CCBI’s exemption. This includes breakfast. Phone 931-526-9521 or toll free 1-800-826-2791.

Cookeville area residents who would be willing to host guests for sleeping and breakfast should phone or email Margaret Ridley to say how many they would like to have.
You may reach Margaret by calling 931-526-1096 or by sending an e-mail to margaretridley@charter.net.

Changes in Kenya!

An example of shocking excitement is provided in this recent email from CCBKenya’s highly valuable and efficient director Mr. Martin Cheryiot:

Dear Bro./Dr. Sharples;Sis Paula & Sis Jan,

I am delighted to have this wonderful opportunity to say a word of ‘hallo’ to you and more so to express my appreciation for your ardent efforts you directed towards the CCBI-Kenya fraternity - the efforts of which facilitated and continue to facilitate the smooth running of the college.

In particular, I would like to thank you Dr. Sharples for living up to your promise of seeing to it that more text materials are supplied/added to the college. I believe this strategy will go a long way to match up with the steady increase in the number of students having a steady purpose - thanks to the effective advertising efforts by the National Director, Mr. Peter K. Nyagrowa.

Sis Paula & Sis Jan, yes, I do remember the times when I needed some clarifications especially on student matters and you were always there to assist as much as you could. Indeed just recently, you sent all graduation certificates just in time for the graduation. I cannot tell you how glad I was for the turn of events in this and all other previous
accounts. In a nutshell, our Almighty God has surely been in control- ALL THANKS GO (BACK) TO HIM.

Yes, I am sure you’re now aware that I officially /practically stopped administering the CCBI-Kenya affairs with effect from 15th April, 2002. I also believe that you have already been introduced to John Mwazemba who will carry on with the CCBI-Kenya affairs. I tried my level best to detail for him what apertains to the administration of the college affairs, despite the short time available then.

On behalf of CCBI we express deep appreciation for the time and dedication Martin has put forth to make the Kenya division a leader in numbers of active students and graduates. His wisdom, expertise and organizational skills will be difficult to replace, but it is typical for him to have given training to a replacement before leaving.
